Economy of West Bengal

Agriculture is the occupation of the rural masses of West Bengal. Rice, the staple diet is the grown all over the state but mainly in the central and southern regions. The other grains like maize, wheat, barley are also grown widely. The cash crops include tea, jute and oil seeds. The state produces two thirds of the country’s jute. Tobacco is another cash crop and ITC, the major cigarette producing industry is located in West Bengal.  The State is one of the progressive states with rapid growth of industrialization after the independence of India. The state government has also given a fillip to the industrialization with one window clearance system called the “Shilpa Bandhu”. West Bengal has steel, chemicals, fertilizers, sugar, tea and recent expansion of the ITES and BPO industry. All the big names can be seen here. The workers are generally well qualified but with the inherent problem of communist leanings.
