West Bengal Cities

Kolkota Vacation

Getaways. The city offers a convenient stay option to visit some of the best tourist locations in the eastern India. The first among the jewels, Chandan Nagar is just 25 miles from the city center. The place with its French legacy has some of finest samples of Gallic architecture. Further North is Nabadweep, just two and a half hour drive from Kolkata. The unsullied beaches of Nabadweep and little nippy temperatures especially from Nov to Jan would make you forget the Caribbean. The ISKCON temple of Nabadweep is a major tourist attraction for a Westerner.

The South of Kolkata offers the rustic and wild charms of the Sunderbans and Diamond Harbor. The Sunderbans, the largest delta, the largest Mangrove forests are the result of three Northeast Indian rivers, Ganga, Meghna and Brahmputra meeting the Bay of Bengal. The Mangrove jungles are inhabited by fancy animals, the Royal Bengal Tiger, wild boars, deer and range of bird species. The Diamond Harbor is famous for its beaches and all inclusive beach resorts.

The South also presents the former Capital of Bengal, Murshidabad. It has rich Mogul legacy especially that of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah. If you have the time and energy to go for round trips of three to four days then better go for Konark, Darjeeling, Puri, Kalimpong and other notable destinations of Orissa and North east. The whole of Northeast presents an unexplored, virgin territory of scenic beauty. Manipur, the land of seven hills, is a heaven on earth. It is sad that many extremist organizations are playing a spoil sport to the efforts of the Indian Government to develop the region as a major tourist attraction. So a little caution is advised for an adventure in uncharted territories.
